Vocabulary and Reading Resources

Reading consistently over a long period of time is the single best way to raise reading scores on any standardized test, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, and GMAT. We highly recommend that students aiming for higher test scores begin reading early and often, and gradually increase the level of difficulty of their reading.

The resources below provide you with multiple ways to improve both your reading speed and comprehension and your vocabulary. Please ask your tutor to help you make a Vocabulary and Reading plan tailored to your needs.

MCA's Customized Online Vocabulary Quizzes

The best vocabulary list in the business just became more accessible. Our vocabulary list - composed of the most difficult words from SAT tests published in the last 15 years - is one of our prized creations. Students rave about our list, frequently telling us that they knew all or most of the words on their SAT. Now you can customize both our 1200+ word Comprehensive Vocabulary List and our High-Frequency Word List (composed of words occurring more than once) into online quizzes of varying lengths that test words of varying difficulty. Each quiz score can be emailed to your tutor.

Please contact your tutor to help set up a schedule of regular vocabulary quizzes.

MCA's Vocabulary Matching Game

Students can now learn our comprehensive vocabulary list in a second, fun way: our online vocabulary matching game. Intuitive and easy-to-play, the student is given a column of words to match with one column of randomly-ordered definitions. Compete with your family or friends to see who gets the highest score! Like our vocabulary quizzes, the matching game can also be customized to varying lengths and to include words of varying difficulty.

MCA's Vocabulary Word Grouping Project

Most of our 1000- Plus word list has been grouped into easy-to-recognize, easy-to-learn categories. Many students learn best by associating rare, more difficult words with easier, more common words. If you are such a student, this may be the best resource for you. Ask your tutor for help in using this resource optimally.

MCA's Weekly High-Frequency Reading List

Our weekly reading list includes carefully chosen articles from the Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal newspapers and the New Yorker magazine. Our research shows that the editorial pages of the above newspapers and articles in the New Yorker magazine contain hundreds of words found on the SAT, GRE, GMAT and LSAT.

The list is split up into twelve, weekly assignments and progresses from easy to medium to difficult reading. This can be a fantastic resource over the school year, when students lack the time to read an entire book. A quiz with vocabulary and comprehension questions follows each set of articles and should be completed after the reading.

To find the articles online, copy and paste the title of the article into a search bar. Please consult your tutor to tailor the list to your specific needs, or if you have any difficulty accessing the articles.

MCA's 2010 Summer Reading List

Contemporary popular writing is often standardized for mass consumption and composed of syntactically and grammatically simple sentences. Thus, students who read popular magazines or teen books often find themselves unprepared for the reading passages on the SAT, ACT, GRE or LSAT. In an effort to help students understand this difficult reading, we have prepared a list of books that match the difficult syntax and vocabulary of standardized tests. Reading and understanding books from this list will help the student feel more comfortable with breaking down the language of difficult standardized test passages.

Please consult your tutor to create a book list tailored to your specific needs and goals.
