Counseling for Freshmen

Freshmen and their parents make a big mistake if they spend too much time thinking – much less obsessing – about college admission. They make an equally big mistake if they don't take time to think strategically about how to make the most of their high school years, both in and out of the classroom. Our ninth grade counseling focuses on developing and beginning to implement a tailored, four-year academic, extracurricular, and standardized testing plan which helps young men and women identify their interests and talents.

Our meetings are not limited to in-person sessions, but include telephone conference calls as well.

Our Freshman Package includes:

Note: For continuing clients, we will combine the year-end and initial meetings.

  • An extended initial meeting with student and parents in the summer before or early fall of a student's Freshman year, to pull together needed information and to begin to develop a four-year academic, standardized testing, and extracurricular profile.
  • Late fall meeting to review academic progress and provide appropriate support.
  • A mid-year review meeting in February or March with student and parents to review progress, plan summer activities, and begin Sophomore-year planning.
  • Guidance, as appropriate, on extracurricular and athletic summer activities, and on highlighting athletic and arts profiles.
  • A meeting in June after Freshman year with student and parents to review the previous year, confirm academic, standardized testing, and extracurricular plans for Sophomore year, and revise the three-year plan, as needed. For continuing clients, this meeting may occur anytime in the summer.
  • Between-meetings access to a counselor for the student or parents to help deal with specific issues or answer particular questions as they arise during the school year.
