Transfer Services
Each year, we work with college freshmen and sophomores who are considering transferring to another undergraduate institution. Barbara Hancock leads this practice area. Mrs. Hancock holds an initial meeting with each student to discuss his or her goals, priorities, and strengths, as well as the factors involved in transfer admissions decisions. These factors vary from college to college and may include: grades earned in college, grades earned in high school, strength of recommendation letters, reputation of college or university from which the student is transferring, year of transfer (or number of credits earned), indication of whether the student plans to enroll full-time or part-time, extracurricular involvement in college, essay or writing sample, SAT or ACT scores, and ability to pay.
Mrs. Hancock communicates with college admission officers to stay current on trends such as institutional decisions to increase, decrease, or eliminate transfer admissions programs, as well as the importance assigned to recommendation letters from transfer applicants' high schools.
Typically, clients have an initial meeting with Mrs. Hancock and then decide whether to schedule subsequent meetings on an as-needed basis, or agree on a package for continuing services. Because it is crucial that applicants present compelling essays and strike the right tone when discussing their reasons for transferring, most students opt for continued assistance with essays and applications.
We offer comprehensive, tailored counseling and have experience working with students who have taken time off during college. In all cases, our emphasis is on helping students find the best fit for their remaining college years. We have worked with transfer clients who have applied to as few as one or two, and as many as eight, colleges or universities. In the past five years, our transfer clients have been accepted to a number of institutions, including: American University; Carnegie Mellon University; College of William & Mary; Colorado College; Columbia University; Duke University; Eugene Lang College; Georgetown University; George Washington University; Goucher College; Miami University; New York University; Occidental College; Pennsylvania State University; Randolph Macon College; Rice University; Sewanee: The University of the South; University of California, Berkeley; University of Virginia; Washington University in St. Louis; Wesleyan University; and Yale University.
Mrs. Hancock's meeting and preparation time for transfer admissions services is billed at $300 an hour. Packages of three hours or more are billed at $275 an hour.
